History of the Maillot Jaune Club

Australia’s most celebrated cycling social group is the Melbourne based Maillot Jaune Club, formed in 1998 by two great exponents of the sport, Gordon Johnson and John Trevorrow.

The ultimate symbol of cycling, the Maillot Jaune, was selected as the Club’s name by the two visionary champions.

Their aim was to form a social club where bikies of all ages could meet four or five times a year over lunch and other special events, to enjoy each other’s company and assist where possible the future of cycling.

The Maillot Jaune is a progressive social club with a stamp of approval from many recent champions and others who currently race on the world stage.

The Maillot Jaune Club has eight Australian wearers of the Maillot Jaune (the ‘Yellow Jersey’): Phil Anderson, Stuart O’Grady, Bradley McGee, Robbie McEwen, Cadel Evans, Simon Gerrans, Baden Cooke and Rohan Dennis.

The Club also has many Sun Tour greats amongst its membership. They include Barry Waddell, John Trevorrow, John Young (dec.), George Goodwin (dec.), Hec Sutherland (dec.) and Trevor Williamson.

The 2020's decade ... record numbers of Australian cyclists are now on the world stage. Who is next to wear the Maillot Jaune?

Cadel Evans, the first Australian to win the Tour de France, accomplished Australia’s greatest single sporting achievement in history, if not, it was equal to any before it!

                                                                                                  - Greg Baum, The Age, Melbourne.

The Executive and members of the Maillot Jaune Inc. Melbourne pay tribute to Cadel Evans, the first Australian and a Patron of our Club, in winning the biggest annual sports event in the world and the most prestigious grand cycling tour of them all – the Tour de France, July 2011. Cadel and the BMC Team, gave us the pleasure and sheer excitement of witnessing this historic win in defeating 200 of the world’s greatest practitioners of road race cycling, in extreme conditions and over some of the most difficult terrain on the planet.

Social Events: go to Social link

Maillot Jaune Club Melbourne, Australia

The Maillot Jaune Club is a friendly inexpensive way to maintain friendships with fellow racing cyclists through social activities, race meetings and special events.

Formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1998 by a small group of former champion track and road racing cyclists, the Maillot Jaune Club set out with simple aims: Provide activities aimed at bringing past and present day racing cyclists together in a social environment to maintain camaraderie and interest in competitive cycling. Support, where possible, the development of cycle racing with a focus on youth and in some cases, the disadvantaged. Welcome new members into the Maillot Jaune Club who have reached, or nearing the end of their competitive racing careers.
